Getting to know you Thursdays with Anita Higman

Please welcome Anita Higman to my blog today. I read Anita's lastest book before Christmas and really loved it.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I grew up on a wheat and cattle farm in Oklahoma. It was a rough life, but at least I learned how to work hard. One of my upcoming novels will be set on an Oklahoma farm, so at least I’ll be able to write that book with some firsthand knowledge of farm life.

When you were a child did you have a favorite book or books?
When I was little I loved fairytales. Cinderella was probably my favorite. And then as I got older I loved the Trixie Belden mysteries.  (My favourite was The snow Queen)

Do you have a favorite genre to both read and write?
I love reading all kind of books, but I really enjoy the old gothic novels like The Romance of the Forest by Ann Radcliffe. I would love to write in a gothic style, but so far there’s not a huge demand for that genre in the Christian marketplace.

Did you have favorite authors growing up who have influenced you?
As I mentioned I loved the fairy tales and mysteries. All of those works surely influenced my writing.

When did you know you wanted to be an author?
When I was very young I tried writing a novel on my junky portable typewriter. I was smart enough to know it was terrible writing, but I wasn’t smart enough to know that you had to practice a lot if you wanted to get better. So, foolishly, I gave up writing for a long time until I suddenly felt an overwhelming need to do it anyway—even if I failed miserably. And I did fail a lot before I had any success.

How did you go about becoming an author?
I attended conferences. I read books on the craft of writing. I wrote and wrote until I got better at it and started selling. It was a long hard process, but it was worth the effort.

If you were not a writer what would you like to be?
Not anything else. I love writing.

Outside reading and writing, what do you like to do?
I enjoy decorating and gardening. Oh, and I love watching good movies. I love to be carried away with a good story.

Do you have a place you love to visit or would love to visit?
I’m dreaming of Ireland, so my husband and I will travel there in the near future.

If you could have a meal with 3 living people who would you choose and why?
  1. Josh Groban, because he has the voice of an angel
  2. Meryl Streep, because she is a living legend
  3. Franklin Graham, because I have such a great respect for what that whole family has given to America

Finally can you tell us about your current books and/or any that will be coming out soon?
My latest book was coauthored with Irene Brand. It’s Love Finds You Under the Mistletoe. Even though the two novellas have a connection to mistletoe and Christmas, they are stories that can be enjoyed all year round. Also, I’m happy to say that the book made two bestseller lists.

Love Finds You Under the Mistletoe
2-in-1 collection by Anita Higman and Irene Brand

Two Christmas stories - one historical, one contemporary - under one cover.
An Appalachian Christmas by Irene Brand
A promise to her dying sister compels Julia Mayfield to take her young nephew to Mistletoe, Kentucky, a tiny town tucked away in the Appalachian Mountains. Sparks fly when she meets David Armstrong, a World War II veteran like herself. Even as shadows from the past weave a dangerous web around Julia and David, will their love flourish like the mistletoe that blankets the nearby hills?

Once Upon a Christmas Eve by Anita Higman
Hollie Goodnight's store has just been voted best Christmas shop in America. All the new publicity draws flamboyant novelist Van Keaton to the cozy town of Noel, Missouri, demanding to write Hollie's story - a dramatic tale of misfortune and triumph. She is swept up in his world of beautiful words and fanciful interludes. . .until Owen Quigly, her lifelong best friend, launches a plan to win her back.

Love Finds You in Humble Texas
Now in its third printing!

The Abernathy sisters. One is bright, one is beautiful, but both are in love with the same man. One sister will let go of love, and like a kite string untethering in the wind, the choice will undo each of their lives. What will it take to heal their hearts, for love to find them in a place called Humble, Texas?
