Getting to Know you Thursday with Richard L. Mabry, MD

Please welcome Richard L. Mabry, MD to my blog today. Richard has a book out the beginning of April and I am sure you will enjoy getting to know him better. (Love the cover of the book).

1. Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m a physician, retired after 26 years in private practice and 10 spent as a medical school professor. I’m a native Texan, and my wife, Kay, and I now live in North Texas.

2. When you were a child did you have a favourite book or books?
I recall enjoying Treasure Island and books by Mark Twain, but I grew up reading just about everything I could get my hands on.

3. Do you have a favourite Genre to both read and right write?
I have always enjoyed suspense, mystery, and police procedurals. I continue to read these, and I believe it helps me as I write what I term “medical suspense with heart,” or romantic medical suspense.

4. Did you have favourite authors growing up who have influenced you?
As an adult I discovered the writing of the late Robert B. Parker, who created the “Spenser”  series. I think his style has had the greatest influence on my writing.

5. When did you know you wanted to be an author?
Friends urged me to turn my journal entries after the death of my first wife into a book. The result was The Tender Scar: Life After The Death Of A Spouse (Kregel, 2006). But in the process of honing my writing skills at Christian writers’ conferences, I came under the influence of several talented authors and supportive editors who encouraged me to try my hand at fiction.

6. How did you go about becoming an author?
I did what I encourage other would-be writers to do: Learn the basics of the craft, both through the excellent books available and attendance at writers’ conferences. Read widely, both good stuff and bad (so you can recognize what makes good writing). Then write. Have your work critiqued by someone who is knowledgeable. Then revise. And revise. Then write some more.

7. If you were not a writer what would you like to be?
My boyhood dream was to be a professional baseball player. Although I never made it past the semi-pro level, I still love the game and wish I could play it every day.

8. Outside reading and writing what do you like to do?
For years, Kay and I loved to travel, but that’s slowing down. Now we enjoy our retirement home, close enough to our children and grandchildren for us to see them frequently. I spend a lot of time reading, and have a standing golf date every Wednesday morning.

9. Do you have a place you love to visit or would love to visit?
We’ve always enjoyed Maui. And we’d love to go back just once more to the Black Forest region of Germany.

10. If you could have a meal with 3 living people who would you choose and why?
My Pastor, Chuck Swindoll, because he’s such a fascinating person with a common-sense attitude on life. Former major league pitcher, Nolan Ryan, because I’d love to hear some of his inside baseball stories. And suspense author Lee Child, because I’d like to know how he keeps coming up with such gripping plots.

Finally can you tell us about your current books and/or any that will
be coming out soon. Also where we can find you on the web.
You can find me on my website at http://rmabry.com as well as my blog: http://rmabry.blogspot.com.

My debut novel, Code Blue, comes out on April 1 (Abingdon Press). Here’s a preview: Code Blue means more to Dr. Cathy Sewell than the cardiac emergencies she faces. It describes her mental state when she finds that returning to her hometown hasn’t brought her the peace she so desperately needs. Now two men compete for her affection; the town doctors resent the fact that she’s a woman and a newcomer; and the potentially fatal heart problem that results from one of her prescriptions may mean the end of her practice. But a killer doesn’t just want to run her out of town—they want her dead.

What Others Are Saying:

"A healthy dose of mystery, with ample injections of suspense and
romance. Richard Mabry's splendid debut novel is just what the doctor
ordered."
- James Scott Bell, bestselling author of Try Fear and Deceived.

“Strap in and hang on. Code Blue races through the corridors of a small town Emergency Room and the intrigue of covert revenge. Grab the rails on your gurney! You’ll never see that last turn coming!”
-Austin Boyd, author of the Mars Hill Classified series

“In Code Blue Dr. Richard Mabry demonstrates his expertise in the medical field, but more important, he establishes his skills as a medical suspense writer. This is a writer to watch.”
-DiAnn Mills, author of Breach Of Trust and Sworn To Protect

“Rarely does a debut novel draw me in and rivet my attention as Dr. Richard Mabry’s Code Blue did.”            -BJ Hoff, bestselling author of The Emerald Ballad series and The Riverhaven Years

Availability:
Code Blue will be released on or before April 1. It can be pre-ordered before then from any bookseller, either through an independent or chain brick-and-mortar store or online. For further details, contactAbingdon Press.

Jenny,
Thanks for having me here. I don't think I've ever been interviewed in Oceania before. (Hope I got that right. Geography was never my strong suit).
