Getting to Know you Thursday with Marlayne Giron

Please welcome Marlayne Giron to getting to know you Thursdays. I have enjoyed getting to know Marlayne.

1. Can you tell us a little about yourself? I just turned 50 this year (Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!). I've been married over 23 years and have a teenaged daughter turning my hair gray. I work part-time as a career secretary and am a Messianic Jewish believer in Jesus.

2. When you were a child did you have a favourite book or books? The Secret Language (I found a copy of this through Amazon just a few years ago), The Lord of the Rings, Heidi, Black Beauty, and I LOVED all the classic fairytales.

3. Do you have a favourite Genre to both read and right write? Celtic and medieval fantasy/fiction. I love the whole Robin Hood/King Arthur genre. Stephen Lawhead is one of my favorite authors of this genre (he also happens to have a copy of my book!)

4. Did you have favourite authors growing up who have influenced you? Definitely J.R.R. Tolkien.

5. When did you know you wanted to be an author? I never aspired to be "an author". I just enjoyed writing and started writing hundreds of short stories with my best friend Lisa at the age of 12, putting ourselves into our favorite television show as characters in the stories.

6. How did you go about becoming an author? It actually took me 30 years to get my one novel, The Victor, published. Before that I couldn't pay people (not even family) to read it. Now I have perfect strangers reading it and writing wonderful reviews about my book! It's so validating! I actually had given up on ever getting it published for a good 15 years but God has great timing because if the book had been published in the early 80s/late 90s when I was really trying - there was no internet, email or social networking sites to get the word out.

7. If you were not a writer what would you like to be? I already am what I would be. A wife, mother and career secretary. A girl has to do something to bring home the bacon!

8. Outside reading and writing what do you like to do? I love to cook and entertain and go to the movies. I do really wonderful high teas. I used to ice-skate and really miss it but I'm afraid I'd hurt myself now if I tried. I also used to scrapbook a lot and create cards using stamps.

9. Do you have a place you love to visit or would love to visit? I love Maui and Victoria in British Columbia. I also love Lancaster County in Pennsylvania because it takes you back to another time.  I would love to visit and eat my way through Italy. I would love to see the Neuschwantstein (Cinderella) castle in Germany, the Swiss Alps, and France but I'm too broke and too terrified to get on a plane.

10. If you could have a meal with 3 living people who would you choose and why? George W. Bush (just because I think he is such a wonderful man), Barack Obama (so I could give him a piece of my mind) and Amy Grant after her concert here in March. It was one of her songs  that inspired The Victor.

Finally can you tell us about your current books and/or any that will be coming out soon. Also where we can find you on the web.
  • My book, The Victor is available on the internet through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Christianbook.com. • It is for ages 12 up to adults (for both genders) and has been Lexile scored at 1060, AR points are 15, ATOS level is 7.7.
  • The Victor also has an accompanying Teacher's Guide for those who are teachers in public or private schools and for those whom home school (available directly through me). The links are below:
