Description:
Newly widowed and desperate for work, Dianne Pierceson arrives in Carlton as the new schoolteacher. What she hopes is that she will find a way to forget her loss and manage to support herself in the process. But what she finds is something altogether different. The schoolmaster is young and handsome, but he is hiding something behind his stern, indifferent exterior. Whispers and rumours about the schoolmaster's wife, who has not been seen for years, gradually begin to affect Dianne. While she cannot believe her handsome employer could be as dark and horrible as rumours suggest, there are too many unanswered questions for her to be totally at ease. But in a nation devastated by the effects of the Depression, what other choices of employment does a widowed woman have?A moving and suspenseful drama about secrets, loss and hope, and a woman who is not afraid to face the truth.

My Review:
This is the first Meredith Resce book I have read and I really enjoyed it. I had seen a little of the sequal and really wanted to read this book so when a friend let me borrow it I wasn't disappointed.
The book is set in the Great Depression in Australia where any job is hard to come by. Diane arrives in Carlton to teach. She meets the new schoolmaster and finds him quite intimidating but is also determinded he won't run her off from this job. She hears the rumours but doesn't believe all that is being said. Through a few turns She sees a different side of the Schoolmaster and through her patiences and kindess hope is born. I found this a wonderful drama and loved how Meredith worked with 2 wounded Charators and interweaved a wonderful conection. I cant wait to read book 2 and will be on the look out for other books writen by Meredith.
4.5 out of 5.
