Book Review Bye Bye Bertie by Nancy Mehl

Bye Bye Bertie by Nancy Mehl

Ivy Towers is working hard to get Miss Bitty s Bygone Bookstore on its feet in Winter Break, Kansas, when she discovers a map hidden inside an old music box. Could the map lead her to the Lost Gambler s Gold? The legend of the ill-fated 1860s gambler had circulated among residents for as long as Ivy can remember. But when Ivy follows the directions to where X marks the spot, what she digs up uncovers a mystery that leads to more than she ever imagined. Lives will be changed, old secrets revealed, and Ivy will learn that lost treasure can sometimes turn out to be much more valuable than a chest full of gold.

My Review:
This is the second book in the Ivy Towers Mysteries. I loved the first book and this is no different. I joined up to the Heartsong presents Mystery club and have quite a few books still to read. I am trying to read a book from each state when I remembered this book is from Kansas and I needed to read a book from there so choose this one. I think Ivy has a wonderful job working in a bookstore and enjoying working with books. She comes across a map that she thinks could lead her to the Lost Gamber's Gold. Ivy digs up a mystery and here the fun starts. We also see her parents come to town and see how her Mother thinks she is wasting her life in the small town and its interesting seeing why she feels this. I loved the story and seeing the way the characters develop. A great read.

Pastor Grayson Sterling loves his wife.

The problem is, Sara was killed by a hit-and-run driver two years ago. Grayson knows he needs to move on, that the continuing depth of his grief is not healthy for him or his young son. Desperate, he convinces his church to hire Mark Welch as associate pastor to relieve him of some of his load. When Adrea Welch arrives at his church with her brother, Grayson cannot deny his attraction to her.

For years, florist Adrea Welch has been artfully arranging white roses for Sara Sterling. Now those flowers are carried to the cemetery by a faithful, grieving husband. How can Adrea be so attracted to a man still devoted to his dead wife? When secrets from Adrea’s past collide with their budding relationship, both she and Grayson must learn to lean on God’s abiding wisdom.

My Review:
This is yet another book I bought in the city. This is a book I couldn't put down and wanted to keep reading. I love the story. Grayson is still grieving his wife's death and Sara has her own issues she is dealing with. I love how their paths seem cross in different ways. Seeing the story unfold with both having to deal with different issues. One dealing with grief and one with guilt. Throw into the mix a little boy and a couple of pets lead to some interesting situations. This is a touching story.

Book Review In Search of a Dream by Pamela Griffin

In Search of a Dream by Pamela Griffin

Heartsong Presents #908
Historical Romance
ISBN 978-1-60260-881-8

From the Back Cover:

Clemmie Needs To Let Go.

After three years with no contact from him, Clemmie Lyons needs to put her dream of marrying Joel Litton behind her. To make the transition easier, Clemmie leaves Lyons’ Refuge with all its memories of Joel and visits a friend for the summer. But nothing prepares her for the moment she discovers Joel living nearby, trying to hide a terrible secret from all who knew him.

Joel is consumed with guilt and is sure God can never forgive him. He can’t let the Lyons family learn what has happened and be disappointed in and ashamed of him. But when Clemmie reenters his life and insists that God isn’t through with him, Joel finds himself strangely tempted to hope again.

Will these two friends find a way to make their dreams reality, or will guilt over the past ultimately drive them apart?

My Review:
Another book I bought in the city and loved the story. Clemmie has gone to visit a friend for summer and finds the boy she has loved since she was a child is living in the same area but he doesn't want anyone knowing where he is. Its hard to say to much without giving parts of the story away but I did like how Pamela handled the story. The book deals with forgiving oneself, accepting God's forgiveness, guilt and courage. Another really good read.

Book Review Love's Winding Path by Lauralee Bliss

Love's Winding Path by Lauralee Bliss

HP 890
ISBN 978-160260-707-1
CONTEMPORARY

Red rocks. River rafting. Freedom!

From the back cover:

After years of impatient living and working on his parents’ peanut farm, Dan has finally escaped. Life as a river guide in Moab, Utah, is as far from peanut farming in Virginia as a man can get, and Dan revels in the newness of this life. An awesome job, a cool car, a place of his own—and a gorgeous girl.

Gorgeous or not, Jo has no intention of dating Dan. He’s just a bit too sure of himself, and he shows no interest in God. He’s also got issues to deal with, although, so does she. . . . But as long as Dan avoids God, Jo will avoid Dan. At least, that’s the plan.

When life in Moab takes some unexpected twists and turns, Dan must face who he really is. Maybe all that God stuff is true. But will he let go and believe, or continue to tough it out alone?

My Review:
Another book I bought while in the city and loved the story. I haven't been rafting but I loved reading about the formations in the area and the rafting experiences. Dan is sick of living and working on his families peanut farm and wants to be a rafting guide. Jo is already in Moab working with her cousins rafting business. Watching the story unfold with all the twists and turns was interesting. This book deals with unresolved issues which both need to work through. Another good book.

Book Review: The Marriage Masquerade by Erica Vetsch

The Marriage Masquerade by Erica Vetsch

HP #887
ISBN 978-1-60260-700-2
HISTORICAL

Noah just wants to start over.
Captain Noah Kennebrae can no longer deal with the shame and guilt from the wreck of his ship. So he changes his name and takes a job as assistant lighthouse keeper on Sutton Island, heedless of the marriage contract his grandfather has arranged for him. No woman in her right mind would want to marry him now, anyway.

Desperate to escape the calculating grasp of her father and his cronies, Anastasia Michaels leaves her home to take the unlikely job of housekeeper on a remote island. Knowing how terrified of water she is, surely her father would never think to look for her there.

But neither Nick nor Annie considered that God’s hand might be at work in their lives. When they each take things into their own hands, He must work a miracle to bring them back to His original plan.

My Review:
This is one of the books I bought in the City this week and read it on the bus trip home yesterday. I really enjoyed the story. It was different from many books I have read. They story has both the Hero and Heroine running from a situation. Both end up working on a remote Island, Noah working as an assistant lighthouse keeper and Anastasia as a house keeper. It was interesting watching what would happen and how the situation changes them. Its interesting seeing how others try to control both Noah and Anastasia and how they become stronger because of it.
The remote setting is an interesting and learning more about lighthouses is interesting also. A good read.

CFBA Tour The 13th Demon by Bruce Hennigan

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
The 13th Demon
Realms (October 4, 2011)
by
Bruce Hennigan

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Bruce Hennigan was born and raised in the isolated countryside of Shreveport, La., a place full of possibilities for the active mind of a young boy. The fertile imagination he cultivated while playing deep in the Louisiana woods would lead to a lifelong love of creative writing.

In 2006, Hennigan pursued the Certified Apologetic Instructor Certificate from the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. He has become a frequent speaker at regional and state events on apologetics and his strong point is in making these sometimes hard to understand issues easily approachable for the average Christian. Hennigan’s experience in apologetics inspired him to write his new novel, The 13th Demon: Altar of the Spiral Eye, a supernatural Christian thriller that combines science and faith. Now, combining his love for apologetics and his love for the art of writing, Hennigan is pursuing a career as the “Michael Crichton” of Christian fiction building powerful, fast paced stories around the truths of Christian apologetics.

Hennigan currently resides in Shreveport with his wife and daughter. He continues to write and to practice radiology at the Willis Knighton Health Care System. He has secured Jeff Jernigan of Hidden Value Group (www.hiddenvaluegroup.com) as his literary agent and has signed a five book deal with the Realms imprint of Charisma Media for “The Chronicles of Jonathan Steel”.

ABOUT THE BOOK

When Jonathan Steel wakes up on a beach in a raging thunderstorm, naked, beaten, and bleeding, he has no idea who he is or how he got there. But just as he starts to make progress in his slow journey to recovery, tragedy strikes again, taking everything in his new life that he has come to love and rely on.
Filled with rage and a thirst for revenge, he searches the countryside for the entity responsible—an entity called only the Thirteenth Demon. His quest brings him to Lakeside, Louisiana, and a small country church where evil is in control and strange writing on the walls, blood-soaked floors, and red-eyed spiders have appeared in the sanctuary.

As he faces the final confrontation with an evil presence that has pursued him all of his life, he must choose between helping the people he loves or destroying the thirteenth demon.

CFBA Tour Wonderland Creek by Lynn Austin

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Wonderland Creek
Bethany House (October 1, 2011)
by
Lynn Austin

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

For many years, Lynn Austin nurtured a desire to write but frequent travels and the demands of her growing family postponed her career. When her husband's work took Lynn to Bogota, Colombia, for two years, she used the B.A. she'd earned at Southern Connecticut State University to become a teacher. After returning to the U.S., the Austins moved to Anderson, Indiana, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and later to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

It was during the long Canadian winters at home with her children that Lynn made progress on her dream to write, carving out a few hours of writing time each day while her children napped. Lynn credits her early experience of learning to write amid the chaos of family life for her ability to be a productive writer while making sure her family remains her top priority.

Extended family is also very important to Austin, and it was a lively discussion between Lynn, her mother, grandmother (age 98), and daughter concerning the change in women's roles through the generations that sparked the inspiration for her novel Eve's Daughters.

Along with reading, two of Lynn's lifelong passions are history and archaeology. While researching her Biblical fiction series, Chronicles of the Kings, these two interests led her to pursue graduate studies in Biblical Backgrounds and Archaeology through Southwestern Theological Seminary. She and her son traveled to Israel during the summer of 1989 to take part in an archaeological dig at the ancient city of Timnah. This experience contributed to the inspiration for her novel Wings of Refuge.

Lynn resigned from teaching to write full-time in 1992. Since then she has published twelve novels. Five of her historical novels have won Christy Awards in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, and 2009 for excellence in Christian Fiction. And two of her inspirational fiction books were chosen by Library Journal for their top picks in 2003, and 2005. One of Lynn's novels has been made into a movie for the Hallmark Channel, starring actress Shirley Jones. Ms Jones received a 2006 Emmy Award nomination for her portrayal of Aunt Batty in the film.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Alice Grace Ripley lives in a dream world, her nose stuck in a book. But happily-ever-after life she's planned on suddenly falls apart when her boyfriend, Gordon, breaks up with her, accusing her of living in a world of fiction instead of the real world. Then to top it off, Alice loses her beloved job at the library because of cutbacks due to the Great Depression.

Fleeing small-town gossip, Alice heads to the mountains of eastern Kentucky to deliver five boxes of donated books to the library in the tiny coal-mining village of Acorn. Dropped off by her relatives, Alice volunteers to stay for two weeks to help the librarian, Leslie McDougal.

But the librarian turns out to be far different than she anticipated--not to mention the four lady librarians who travel to the remote homes to deliver the much-desired books. While Alice is trapped in Acorn against her will, she soon finds that real-life adventure and myster--and especially romance--are far better than her humble dreams could have imagined.

Gloria's relationship with her daughter is tattered and strained, and the arrival of Kai, despite the woman's apparent good intentions, makes Gloria fearful. My Review:
Thanks the Litfuse for my review copy: I loved this book. This book deals with international adoption, a potential fatal genetic disease and two families with an interest in one child. Kai is a doctor who grew up in China and had to watch her sister being adopted by an American couple. Years later Kai is meeting with Lily's adopt parents to reunite with her sister and to discuss that fact she may have a medical issue. I found the book interesting as I knew little of the Cultural Revolution in China and some of the issues resulting from it. I knew a little about adopting in China due to friends adopting a girl from there and knew how hard it was for them and some of the issues they faced with the cultural differences. I love how the book tells Kia's story about what happened in China and how she got to be where she is. Kia is also searching for something she wants to know about God but doesn't realise that is what she is looking for. This was a compelling story and would recommend it to all. I have read 2 others of Patti's book and I think this is by far her best so far.

Litfuse Blog tour The Wonder of Your Love by Beth Wiseman

About the book:
Katie Ann lost the love of her life. Then God offers her a new beginning in Colorado.

Katie Ann Stolzfus lives in the small Amish community of Canaan, Colorado. At forty she is widowed and raising her first child. But baby Jonas will never know his father, and Katie Ann wonders if her Heavenly Father hasn't forgotten about her as well. Is it really God's plan for her to be a single parent?

Eli Detweiler has come to Canaan for a wedding and a long vacation. Having raised six children following the death of his young wife, Eli is finally an empty-nester. He's enjoying the slower pace of having no one to care for but himself.

When Katie Ann and Eli meet, there is an instant connection. Yet as strong as the attraction is, they both acknowledge that a romance would never work. He is done parenting, while she has just begun.

But as their friendship slowly blossoms into feelings that are as frightening as they are intoxicating, Katie Ann and Eli question if the plans they made for themselves are in line with God's plans.

Can Katie Ann entrust her heart to another man, and rediscover the wonder of God's love?

Beth Wiseman Party

My Review:
I received this book as part of this blog tour. This is the first book I have read by Beth and I did enjoy it. Its book two in the series but I could follow it without any problem even though I hadn't read the first book. Katie Ann is a new mother and also a widow and Eli is a widower who raised 6 children and is looking forward to time on his own. This story is different from many of the Amish stories I have read where many had become so similar and predictable. Here we have  an older first time mother just starting to raise her child and a father who has just seen his youngest child married. Both are a similar age but both at totally different stages of there life. It was interesting seeing the interaction between the two. There are secondary characters who add to this story and keep it interesting and at times threaten to steal the limelight. I also love a stray barn cat that I couldn't help cheering for. Watching the friendship blossom and waiting to see what next make me keep turning the pages and find time to read more. Good read.

CFBA Tour Love on the Line by Deeanne Gist

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Love on the Line
Bethany House (October 1, 2011)
by
Deeanne Gist

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

After a short career in elementary education, Deeanne Gist retired to raise her four children. Over the course of the next fifteen years, she ran a home accessory and antique business, became a member of the press, wrote freelance journalism for national publications such as People, Parents, Parenting, Family Fun, Houston Chronicle and Orlando Sentinel, and acted as CFO for her husband’s small engineering firm--all from the comforts of home.

Squeezed betwixt-and-between all this, she read romance novels by the truckload and even wrote a couple of her own. While those unpublished manuscripts rested on the shelf, she founded a publishing corporation for the purpose of developing, producing and marketing products that would reinforce family values, teach children responsibility and provide character building activities.

After a few short months of running her publishing company, Gist quickly discovered being a "corporate executive" was not where her gifts and talents lie. In answer to Gist’s fervent prayers, God sent a mainstream publisher to her door who licensed her parenting I Did It!® product line and committed to publish the next generation of her system, thus freeing Gist to return to her writing.

Eight months later, she sold A Bride Most Begrudging to Bethany House Publishers. Since that debut, her very original, very fun romances have rocketed up the bestseller lists and captured readers everywhere. Add to this two consecutive Christy Awards, three RITA nominations, rave reviews, and a growing loyal fan base, and you’ve got one recipe for success.

Her latest releases, Beguiled, Maid To Match, and Love on the Line are now available.

Gist lives in Texas with her husband of twenty-eight years and their border collie. They have four grown children. Click here to find out the most up-to-the-minute news about Dee.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Rural switchboard operator Georgie Gail is proud of her independence in a man's world ... which makes it twice as vexing when the telephone company sends a man to look over her shoulder.

Dashing Luke Palmer is more than he appears though. He's a Texas Ranger working undercover to infiltrate a notorious gang of train robbers. Repairing telephones and tangling with this tempestuous woman is the last thing he wants to do.  But when his stakeout puts Georgie in peril, he realizes more than his job is on the line.

Book Review Love Inspired books by Lyn Cote

Back of the Book
Struggling single mother Rosa Santos is deeply touched when volunteers band together to build her a home. With a waitressing job, community college and church, Rosa barely has time to help, let alone dream about a husband and father figure. But when handsome volunteer Marc Chambers hands her withdrawn young son a little hammer, her heart swells. Suddenly, her son is blossoming. But the closer she and Marc get, the more he pulls away. Why? He's built her a shelter of hope. One she—and her son—pray he'll take refuge within....

My Review:
I won this book from a contest on Goodreads and finally got around to reading the book. I really enjoyed the story. I love how Lyn is using a real charity in this series. Habitat for humanity which builds houses for needy people. The community and the new home owner help build the house and the recipient will then pay of a much a mortgage a price they can afford. This book features Rosa who is the mother of a young son whos father has rejected him. She lives with her grand mother who is charming. Marc is a volunteer who is helping with the house and also has a charming grandmother. I love how the grandmothers get together to think of ways to put the two together. There are some interesting twists and turns in this book which I found interesting to watch. Good read.

Back of the Book

Dr. Jake McClure's basset hound has fallen in love. With a single mom, her adorable twins and the orphaned kittens they rescued. Man's best friend suddenly won't budge from Jeannie Broussard's home—and Jake can understand why. Jeannie's place is full of love, laughter and everything Jake has been missing in his life lately. As Jake spends time with Jeannie and her girls, a bond forges between them, and soon Jake is wondering if he's the perfect fit in this fatherless family….

Book Review:
This is the second book in the series. This is another good read. This time I have to say that Bummer the Basset hound tends to steal the show. After Jeannie's twins find 2 orphaned kittens Bummer decides he his job is to look after them. It is so cute to read about the bond between these animals. I love the interaction between the twins, animals and adults. This is a touching story and I loved every minute of it. I am eagerly awaiting book 3 in this series. One thing this books shows is that sometimes accepting a blessing or a hand is actually a blessing to others. This book shows how some find it hard to accept help thinking it shows weakness when infact the giver is just wanting to share and make life a little easier and learning to accept blesses both people. This issue is one I have experienced from the givers side, I have friend I will often take extra produce I have been given but they insist on paying for it when it was a free gift to me. This really annoys me cos they will do things for me and not except payment but wont accept it in return. This books deals with just this issue.

CWDownunder Blog Alliance

Christian Writers Downunder has started a Blog Alliance to promote Australian books. I am taking information from the Christian Writers Downunder site.

What's a Blog Alliance? It's when a group of people who have blogs get together and blog about a book. Not just any book, but in this case, an AUSSIE book. The goal is to make everyone aware of Australian Christian authors. The book nominated will be blogged over a three day period by our group of bloggers. This will either be a Monday -Wednesday, or Wednesday-Friday. Most people blog on those days, so there shouldn't be a problem.

There is more information at http://www.christianwritersdownunder.com/BlogAlliance.html
If you are a reader and have a blog and would like to be part of this alliance go to the above link read the information and sign up.
There will be a list of books sent out for you to choose from about 2 months inadvance of the tour to allow time to read the books. You do not have to request all books you can choose which books you wish to read.
You can choose as few or many as you can read. You will be required to post on the day and to post a review.

This is a great venture to help promote Australian books and more reviewers are more than welcome.

Getting to know you Thursdays with Penelope McCowen

Today please welcome Australian author Penelope McCowen to my blog today. I read Penelope's book a few months ago and really loved it.

1. Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I live on a sheep and cattle property high up on the ranges in northern New South Wales with my wonderful husband, Charlie, and our two precious children, aged 14 and 12.  It’s one of the most rugged places you could ever imagine – rocky, steep, rough and unbelievably picturesque.  Rather challenging if you’re trying to run livestock on it, but lots of fun and never, ever dull!

2. When you were a child did you have a favourite book or books?
I was mad about Enid Blyton books – in particular the Famous Five series.  I never wanted them to end and was so disappointed when I read all 21!  I also loved Ruby Ferguson’s Jill books, Elynne Mitchell’s Silver Brumby collection and Mary Grant Bruce’s Billabong series. (Jenny here I loved Enid Bylton as a child I loved the faraway series and I did enjoy the Famous Five series too. I remember in about grade 6 we had books in the class room and use to share books. I remember alot of us were reading the Secret Seven and were sharing books)

3. Do you have a favourite Genre to both read and write?
Reading – Christian fiction, espionage, intrigue, preferably with a dash of romance.  I love reading old books; I could spend hours and hours in second hand bookshops.  I think we can learn so much from the literary styles of long ago authors.  They really had a handle on the English language and used words so beautifully.
Writing – Definitely Christian fiction.  Unless God has other plans, I’ll never write anything else.

4. Did you have favourite authors growing up who have influenced you?
I was terribly influenced and inspired by the South African journalist and author, Joy Packer.  I still am. The way she put words together is incredible and still gives me shivers down my spine.  So vivid and so alluring was her portrayal of Africa in the pages of her novels that I began a love affair with her country when I read The High Roof at age fourteen.  I promised myself I would go there one day which I eventually did, eleven years later.
My other heroine in the world of words is Helen MacInnes.  She was an amazing writer, particularly the way she wrote dialogue, and I get shivers from her books as well!  I read The Venetian Affair while I was writing Heidi’s October and as a result I cut 14000 words from my manuscript.  She’s sharp, if that makes sense, and very inspiring.

5. When did you know you wanted to be an author?
Always.  I wrote as a child, I wrote as an adolescent and I write as an adult.  Having said that though, on leaving school, I knew that I was incapable of moving straight into a writing career – I was too green, too narrow, too raw.   My work was very immature and I needed life experience, so I did nursing and became a registered nurse, then a commerce degree and became an accountant, and now thankfully, I’m doing what I absolutely love. At last!

6. How did you go about becoming an author?
I had started a couple of books and wasn’t sure whether I was to continue along that road or not, so one January I asked God if this was the year to go for it with my writing.  He answered, very creatively and entertainingly, with a yes, so I went forward.  My husband then discovered that Zondervan was running a First Novel Competition which I entered and to my surprise, reached the semi-finals… and things have kind of developed from there!

7. If you were not a writer what would you like to be?
A thousand things!  Too many to mention.  I love animals so perhaps a vet, I learnt to fly in my twenties (it was amazing) so perhaps a pilot, I love speaking to people about Jesus, so perhaps a travelling evangelist, I love the water so perhaps a swimming instructor, I love tennis so perhaps a tennis coach, on and on it goes!

8. Outside reading and writing what do you like to do?
I absolutely love being a wife and mother and I love working alongside my husband here on the farm.  I stopped working in accounting when I had our first child and traded the income for the lifestyle, and I would make the same decision again every time.  The little things really are the big things.
9. Do you have a place you love to visit or would love to visit?
There’s a wooden bench that faces east on the headland at South West Rocks, just above the ice-cream kiosk.  We sit there, every January, with our icecreams and gaze at the view, and I remember Jesus’ words that no mind can conceive how wonderful is the place He has prepared for those who love Him.  And I think to myself, how amazing that it can be even more gorgeous than this!

10. If you could have a meal with 3 living people who would you choose and why?
Without a doubt it would be our three sponsored children, one in Kenya, one in the Dominican Republic and one in Bolivia.  I’ve never met them but I long to.  I’d love to sit and look at them and marvel at what God can do, how He can change lives... and hearts….

Finally can you tell us about your current books and/or any that will
be coming out soon. Also where we can find you on the web.
My first novel, Heidi’s October, was published by Ark House Press in November 2010.  It’s the story of twenty-three year old university student Heidi Jordan and one October of her life.  It deals with the issue of forgiveness following one disastrous, very regrettable mistake.  And it also has a touch of romance, of course!
My next book, The Boatshed, is in the making..!
And my website is www.penelopemccowen.com. I have a blog as well, and am also on Facebook.

Thanks again for your time and agreeing to be on my blog.
Thank you so much, Jenny, for the wonderful opportunity to be featured on your blog, and for your kindness in promoting my work.

Blog tour a Christmas Journey Home by Kathi Macias with giveaway.

How did you come up with the idea for A Christmas Journey Home?

I knew I wanted to do a Christmas book—the first of what would become an annual event that my publisher and I were discussing—and I also knew that despite the lighter tone required in a Christmas book (as opposed to the darker themes of the persecuted Church and human trafficking, which I’ve been writing about), I had to stick to my “brand” as closely as possible: hence, an “issues-related” Christmas novel, dealing with the issues related to illegal immigration.

What was your favorite scene to write in A Christmas Journey Home?

I loved writing this entire book, and the characters are delightful (except the villains, of course!), so I loved almost all the scenes. But I think I liked the scenes with Isabella’s old abuelo best, as the grandfather reminded me of my own grandpa and even my dad, both of whom I loved dearly. I love incorporating at least one elderly saint in each of my books, and in this one I decided on a man since most of the other books have had women as the elderly, praying characters. I also brought in a little boy because children can add such a delightful element to any story, and six-year-old Davey certainly does that in A Christmas Journey Home.

What was the most difficult scene, and why?

The toughest scene had to be when Francisco and Isabella thought they were finally on the verge of being able to get away from the migrant camp and find a small home of their own, where their baby could be born in relative comfort and safety. If you’ve read the book, you know that isn’t at all what happens. But this heartbreaking scene had to take place to bring the story to its miraculous conclusion.

What is there about you, apart from writing, that many people don’t know?

First, my “road name” is “Easy Writer” because my husband and I were Harley riders for many years. (We’ve traded the bike in on a 2005 Corvette, so I’m still “Easy Writer” but in comfort now!) Also, I served on staff at a large Southern California church for several years, training small group leaders and doing biblical counseling, among other things.

Who are some of your favorite writers, and are you an avid reader?

Absolutely I’m an avid reader! I have always loved books/reading/words and been fascinated by them. When I ran out of books as I child, I started writing my own. (Voila! Look what came of that!) As for favorite writers, that’s tough, but here are just a few: Brock and Bodie Thoene, Francine Rivers, Patti Lacy, Athol Dickson, Jim Rubart, and Alan Paton, who wrote my favorite all-time fiction book, Cry the Beloved Country. That book changed my life and inspired my novel set in South Africa in 1989, No Greater Love. I also enjoy reading Brennan Manning, Jennifer Kennedy Dean, Oswald Chambers, and Max Lucado for nonfiction.

What’s on the horizon for you now, so far as future book projects?

I am currently finishing up the final book of the three-installment Freedom series (Deliver Me From Evil, Special Delivery, and The Deliverer). Then I will jump into my Christmas 2012 novel (working title is A Home For Christmas) and a novel called Last Chance for Justice, which is part of the multi-author Bloomfield Series with another publisher. After that I hope to get going on a new fiction series, which is still in the discussion/planning stages with my publisher and agent. So life is busy, but most contracts coming my way seem to be fiction right now. I am also keeping busy with very occasional editing projects and some speaking/teaching around the country.

Where can we find out more about you, The Freedom Series, and keep up with your to-be-released books?

Please feel free to visit my website at www.KathiMacias.com.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for posting the author’s interview on my blog. This blog tour is managed by Christian Speakers Services (ChristianSpeakersServices.com).

Book description:
During Isabella Alcantara’s seventh month of pregnancy, her parents and siblings are murdered in gang- and drug-related violence, simply because their home was targeted by mistake. Isabella knows she was spared only because she now lives in a different location, but she knows too that the same thing could easily happen to her and her husband, Francisco. When her grandfather offers to hire a “coyote” to bring them across the border to America, she agrees. But Francisco and Isabella are abandoned by the coyote and left to die. Francisco then valiantly sacrifices himself to get Isabella to safety. Homeless, nearly penniless, pregnant, and alone, Isabella determines to find a way to honor her promise to her beloved husband.

Living on one of the smaller spreads along the Arizona border, Miriam Nelson becomes furious with God and turns from her faith when her
border patrol agent husband, David, is killed in a skirmish with drug smugglers. Though her mother and young son do their best to woo her back from the anger and bitterness that have overtaken her, they make little headway.

Two widows—one driven by fear and a promise, the other by bitterness and revenge—must make their journeys along different pathways, but with the same destination: a barn full of animals that stands waiting for them on Christmas Eve. Forced to face their personal demons, Isabella and Miriam soon discover a common yearning that will bind them together in a most miraculous way.

My review:
I requested this book cos it looked interesting and was a Christmas book. I got more than I expected. This book deals with issues showing things are not always black and white. Isabella and Francisco have escaped to America to get away from the violence but its not as simple as it seems they are left to die in the desert. What happens to them and their story is heart wrenching. I understand the way they entered America illegally but we learn why and what happens to many illegals. On the other side of the coin we have Miriam who's husband was killed by drug smugglers. She is bitter and angry at all illegals blaming them for her husbands death. When their paths eventually cross on Christmas Eve a miracle happens. I loved this story we learn why Isabella's Grandfather wanted her safe. There were times this book had me almost in tears and  made me think of the issues. I loved the way Kathi told the story and I hope many will see another side of this issue. I could see this book being used to break down some misconceptions and be used to create awareness. This is a good read and I would recommend this book.
